MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ brings together foster and kinship families to create small communities that act as an extended family network to support young people in out-of-home care. At the center of the community there is an experienced caregiver that provides mentorship and respite for participating families. They also host monthly gatherings to build relationships and provide long-term support.
Young people thrive in communities that care!
The Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) is partnering with The Mockingbird Society (TMS) to expand the MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ program statewide. The goal is to connect more young people with Mockingbird Constellations in their community, supporting reunification and maintaining existing family, cultural, and community connections.

History of MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™
The first MOCKINGBIRD FAMILY™ Constellation launched in 2004 in Seattle, WA with the goal of creating a “family focused, strength-based model that supports and stabilizes foster and kinship families by recreating the positive qualities and resources found in naturally thriving families.” This evidence-informed approach has since expanded to several states across the country as well as Nova Scotia, the UK, Japan, Netherlands, and Australia.
