Become a Multi-Licensed Care Provider
A multi‑licensed provider is someone who has more than one type of out‑of‑home care license. For example, you might be licensed as a foster parent and also have a child care license.
Having more than one license can make it easier for families to provide both foster care and child care. It also helps children and youth get steady, reliable support from the same caregivers.
Why become a licensed or certified family home child care provider?
When you get a family home child care license, you give children a safe, healthy, and caring place to learn and grow. You also receive support and resources from the state to help you succeed.
Why become a foster parent?
Foster parents give children and youth a safe, loving, and temporary home during a difficult time in their lives. You help them stay connected to their school, community, and family members.
If you have a relative in foster care, you can learn how to support them by visiting the Kinship webpage.
Benefits of becoming Multi-Licensed
- You can welcome children in foster care into your home.
- You can also provide child care services to families in your community.
- If a foster child in your home attends your licensed child care program, you may receive both a monthly foster care payment and a monthly child care payment.
- If you care for children regularly, you may need a license. Some caregivers—like informal parent cooperatives or Family, Friends, and Neighbor providers who offer occasional care—do not need a license.
- You can apply for both licenses at the same time, but many people find it easier to complete one first.
- You can close one license at any time and keep the other. Each license has its own rules and process.
