- Your foster license is good for three years.
- During each three-year cycle, you must complete 24 hours of continuing education (training).
- All trainings must meet one of the four Core Competencies:
- Understanding and Working within the Child Welfare System
- Parenting and Family Management
- Caregiver Self-Awareness and Development
- Racial Equity and Social Justice (RESJ)
- All trainings must meet one of the four Core Competencies:
- You must keep your CPR and First Aid certificate current.

To renew or update your CPR certification:
- Search the web for an in-person class near you that fits the age group you want to care for (adult, child, and infant is available).
- Verify with the trainer that the class meets national standards set by the American Heart Association.
- Pay for and take the class. Keep your receipt and certification card.
- Once your license is issued, you can request payment for the class from your licensor.
