- Your foster license is good for three years.
- During each licensing cycle, you are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education credits.
- You must keep your CPR and First Aid certification current.
To learn more about how to access training, visit the CaRES and Alliance training webpage. You will be notified in advance when your license will expire and given the steps to renew.
To renew or update your CPR certification:
- Search the web for an in-person class near you that fits the age group you want to care for (adult, child, and infant certifications are available).
- Verify with the trainer that the class meets national standards set by the American Heart Association.
- Keep your receipt and certification card.
- Once your license is issued, you can request reimbursement for the class from your licensor.

STEP 1
You will receive a renewal notification via email 90 days before your license expiration date. The email will include a code to access renewal forms in your Washington Caregiver Application Portal (WA CAP) account. You will receive additional email reminders at 60-days and 30 days prior to your license expiration date.
STEP 2
Log into WA CAP at any time to see your expiring documents and to upload training certificates.
STEP 3
Documents you will complete include: the renewal application, background checks, WAC agreements, infant safety, and influenza vaccine agreements, as well as an updated emergency and evacuation plan. Once the renewal application has been completed and signed, your assigned licensor will schedule an in-person home inspection visit and renewal interview. Your licensor will let you know if additional documents are needed, training hours are missing, or any additional collateral contacts are needed for the renewal.
STEP 4
Let your licensor know if you aren’t interested in renewing your license or if there are any significant changes to your home.
Contact your licensor if you are planning on moving or if there are any changes in household members during the 3-year licensing cycle.
Review the Reporting Responsibilities for Foster Parents to read about other changes in circumstances that you need to report to your licensor.
