History
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. The month begins on Sept. 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries.
Notable Figures
Justice Sonia Sotomayor: The first Latina Supreme Court Justice in the United States, known for her impactful decisions and advocacy for justice and equality.
Dr. Ellen Ochoa: The first Latina to go to space and the first Latina to serve as director for the Johnson Space Center.
Rita Moreno: The first Latina to win an Academy Award. She also the first and only Latino to have an EGOT, which is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award.
