The Child Welfare Housing Program provides:
- Access to housing vouchers
- Short-term help with rent
- Help finding a place to live
CWHP services help families with an open child welfare case. Service providers under contract with DCYF help with housing. This help may be provided along with federal housing vouchers from Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) through the Family Unification Program (FUP).
The goal of the CWHP is to prevent the need for foster care placement and shorten the length of time that children remain in out-of-home care when placement is necessary.
CWHP providers can help families apply for a housing voucher, where available. (Additional PHA rules may apply).
Referrals may be made by:
- A DCYF caseworker
- An attorney
- Guardian ad litems
- Parent allies
- Office of Public Defense social worker
- The Court
- The family themselves
