Child Protective Services (CPS) Family Assessment Response (FAR)

What is FAR?

FAR is a different way for DCYF to respond to some reports of child abuse or neglect. Instead of doing an investigation, FAR caseworkers try to support families who are going through a hard time. They do not decide whether parents are to blame for abuse or neglect. They also help families find services and resources in their community.

Not all cases are eligible for FAR. Learn more about CPS Investigations.

How Does FAR Work?

When DCYF gets a report about your family, a FAR caseworker will meet with you to talk about your children’s safety. The caseworker will work with you to see if you need any services or support to help lower the chance of future abuse or neglect.

FAR cases close within 45 days. You and your caseworker can decide to keep the case open for up to 120 days if you feel it would be helpful to your progress.

How Can FAR Help Me?

You know what you and your family need to succeed. Your FAR caseworker will work with you to:

  • Identify how you can improve your child’s safety at home.
  • Meet the basic needs of your family.
  • Increase skills to help you parent your children at all ages and stages.
  • Develop a stronger connection to your community.
  • Find community resources and mentors to address ongoing concerns such as housing, work, or other issues that are creating stress for you and your family.
