DCYF is investing funding in fatherhood support programs for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) fathers and father figures. The intent of this initiative is to build capacity to support fathers, leading to increasing family strengths, enhancing child development, and reducing the likelihood of abuse and neglect.

Fathers often report that they feel ignored or stigmatized by traditional parenting support programs, and that they feel disconnected from other fathers. There are very few parent strengthening and support programs currently available in Washington state that are culturally responsive for AI/AN fathers. It is a goal of this initiative to foster relationships and increase a sense of belonging amongst participants.

The Lummi Nation, Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, and United Indians of All Tribes Foundation are currently receiving funding to provide programs like Fatherhood is Sacred and Wellbriety Fathers of Tradition. These programs incorporate traditional culture and practices, such as drum making and hide tanning.

In 2023, thirteen fathers participated in these programs. Participants shared that the programs have been meaningful and have helped strengthen their own sense of identity as fathers and tribal members. One shared: “Every man has some form of childhood and generational trauma and while ours were drastically different on the surface, I found that we all had the same goal. To be better fathers than those before us, to honor the traditions of [our ancestors], and to help others do the same.
