May 5 is Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day

For generations, American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian peoples have faced an ongoing crisis of violence. On Missing & Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Awareness Day, we honor the individuals missing and the lives lost. As an agency, we also commit to working with our tribal partners to address the policies and practices that have driven this crisis.

In Washington state, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIWP) Task Force is working to address this emergency. The Task Force provides recommendations to the state, law enforcement, service providers, and communities to improve our response to violence against Indigenous people.

We encourage you to read and share the Missing Persons Toolkit. Developed by the MMIWP Task Force in collaboration with the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, this guide provides helpful information about when and how to report a missing person. Together, we can make a difference.
