From summer reading programs, organizing a petting zoo, and putting together book recommendations, Librarian Jen Parker-Hass has positively impacted young people and staff at Echo Glen.

Last month, her dedication was recognized when she was awarded the 2024 Employee of the Year for the Library Division by the Office of the Secretary of State.

“This award not only recognizes her commitment but highlights the transformative power this library has on the young people we serve,” said DCYF’s Assistant Secretary of Juvenile Rehabilitation Felice Upton. “We appreciate all of the hard work Jen puts into creating programs and events at Echo Glen.”

In 2023, DCYF launched the first Washington State Library for Incarcerated Youth at Echo Glen in partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office and Washington State Library, Institutional Library Services (ILS). Jen helped open the library and build programs for young people.

“Her experience and dedication were necessary in ensuring the branch's success,” said Acting State Librarian Crystal Rowe,  “Her contributions to the youth are life changing.”
