Young people at Echo Glen Children’s Center experienced music from the Seattle Symphony during a special performance that brought classical sounds to the juvenile rehabilitation facility.

This performance was a new experience for most young people in attendance. Many shared that they never had the opportunity to attend an instrumental performance and didn’t think they would connect with the music.

“I came thinking that I would not know any of the songs, and I was surprised that they played songs I heard before and liked,” said one young person.

The setlist included Halloween classics and soundtracks from popular movies, making this influential genre of music accessible to young people. Most in attendance expressed how much they loved the Star Wars songs.

“I believe the most positive impact of an event like this is exposure to something new, “said a staff member.

Exposure to new things gives young people the opportunity and confidence to explore hobbies or interests they may have thought were out of reach.

Young people in attendance not only watched the performance but also had the chance to interact with the brass quintet in a Q&A. Young people asked about being a full-time musician, where the symphony has performed, and why a trumpet may be brass or silver.

Thanks to our partnership with the Seattle Symphony, young people will have another opportunity to attend a performance in February.
