Edith Hitchings started working for the State of Washington in 1979 after graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in Sociology. She started her Washington State career with the Department of Social and Health Services, Division of Corrections, Cedar Creek Correction Center. She transferred to Mission Creek Youth Camp in 1983 as a Youth Camp Counselor. In October 1987, Edith transferred to the Division of Children and Family Services in the Shelton office where she was a social worker and by 1989 she had promoted to a social work supervisor. In July of 1995 Edith became the Children’s Administration (CA) Region 6 Child Protective Services (CPS) Program Manager, from there she promoted to Region 6 Deputy Regional Administrator.

Edith has been the Acting Regional Administrator twice for Region 6 and once for Region 3. She was promoted to the Director of CA Program and Policy in April 2013, and in November 2014 she became the CA Executive Staff Director. She was appointed as the CA Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in September 2017.
