On Dec. 17, 2025, DCYF child welfare staff and leadership from across Washington state gathered to discuss the impact High Potency Synthetic Opioids (HPSO) are having on families and the child welfare system.

Topics ranged from harm reduction strategies to available community resources and misconceptions to the agency’s dedication to the safety of children, youth, and families.

“We come into this work because we believe that children and families can and will change if given the opportunity,” said DCYF Area Administrator Becky Sanchez. “These are people in our communities, our neighbors. We care deeply and we want them to be successful.”
