Five young people were part of the first cohort at Green Hill School to earn their barber license after passing their board exams earlier this month.
“Culture Barber Academy is more than a school — it’s a second chance," said Sheron Rogers, Founder of Culture Barber Academy. "We work with young people who’ve been counted out and show them they can stand tall again, with tools in their hands and purpose in their hearts.”
The young people underwent 1,000 hours of state board-approved curriculum, personal development, career exploration, and technical training as part of a partnership with Culture Barber Academy (CBA).
“This program has created a space for us to learn, while mentoring others who are younger,” said one young man in the program.
Those who participate in CBA earn hours towards their professional barber's license. The program is led by licensed and passionate instructors. The program teaches technical skills like sheer work, fades, tapers, and line-ups. The program also builds self-esteem and vision for success beyond confinement.
“I have always wanted to own my own barber shop and have businesses that will help support my family,” said a young person. “This program is giving me a stronger push towards that”
Not only does the program make a positive impact on the young men participating but it provides haircuts to other young people on campus.
“I remember getting free haircuts at “back to school” events when I was younger,” recalled one participant. “I see this as an opportunity to learn new skills that I can use to help people.”
